Probabilistic orbits and dynamical masses of emission-line binaries

چکیده

The observed orbits of emission-line stars may be affected by systematics owing to their broad emission lines being formed in complex and extended environments. This is problematic when orbital parameter probability distributions are estimated assuming radial-velocity data solely comprised Keplerian motion plus Gaussian white noise, leading overconfident inaccurate solutions, with implications for the inferred dynamical masses hence evolutionary models. We present a framework which these systems can meaningfully analysed. synthesise benchmark datasets, each different challenging noise formulation, testing performance algorithms. make datasets freely available aim making model validation an easy standardised practice this field. Next, we develop application processes binaries, named marginalised $\mathcal{GP}$. algorithm, along current algorithms, on synthetic find our $\mathcal{GP}$ algorithm performs significantly better than standard algorithms contaminated systematics. Spectroscopic Orbits for Three Binaries with Low-mass Companions and the Distribution of Secondary Masses

We present orbital solutions for three low-amplitude spectroscopic binaries discovered in a sample of 20 solar-type IAU radial-velocity standard stars observed with the Digital Speedometers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. We update the orbital solutions for HD 114762 and HD 140913, and present a preliminary new solution for HD 29587. For all three orbits the minimum mass for...

Spectroscopic binaries with elliptical orbits

The radial velocity curves of many spectroscopic binaries (SBs) are perturbed by gas streams or proximity effects. For SBs with circular orbits, these perturbations can give rise to spurious orbital eccentricities of high statistical significance. But tests to identify such anomalous orbits can be constructed since perturbed velocity curves are in general no longer Keplerian. The derived tests ...

Modeling Forbidden Line Emission Profiles from Colliding Wind Binaries

This paper presents calculations for forbidden emission line profile shapes arising from colliding wind binaries. The main application is for systems involving a Wolf-Rayet (WR) star and an OB star companion. The WR wind is assumed to dominate the forbidden line emission. The colliding wind interaction is treated as an archimedean spiral with an inner boundary. Under the assumptions of the mode...

The Masses of Distant Galaxies from Optical Emission Line Widths

Promising methods for studying galaxy evolution rely on optical emission line width measurements to compare intermediate-redshift objects to galaxies with equivalent masses at the present epoch. However, emission lines can be misleading. We show empirical examples of galaxies with concentrated central star formation from a survey of galaxies in pairs; HI observations of these galaxies indicate ...

Zoom-whirl orbits in black hole binaries.

Zoom-whirl behavior has the reputation of being a rare phenomenon. The concern has been that gravitational radiation would drain angular momentum so rapidly that generic orbits would circularize before zoom-whirl behavior could play out, and only rare highly tuned orbits would retain their imprint. Using full numerical relativity, we catch zoom-whirl behavior despite dissipation. The larger the...
